Being Deserving vs. Being Entitled - Biggest Loser winner Danni Allen Q&A

Entitlement vs. Deserving

Everyone deserves success, but you have to do the work to achieve it.  The universe doesn't owe you anything.  Expect and desire great things, but know that you have to work for it.  You have to have an entrepreneurial spirit.  You have to earn it.

Jillian is starting to hate the concept of fast weight loss.  She's annoyed.  Is it really that bad if the weight just comes off a pound a week?  We have nothing but time.  People want fast results, or they give up.

Audible.com Deal

Audible.com is giving away a free audio book and a 30-day trial.  Jillian used it to listen to Gatsby.  Go to www.audiblepodcast.com/exercise.

Caller

Eden called in.  Hard Body is her favorite workout ever.  When Aunt Flo comes to visit, she doesn't feel like doing.  Sometimes it's 3-4 days of nasty cramps.  Jillian thinks she should go to the gynecologist.  She has emotional stuff too.

On the days when she feels like crud, she shouldn't jump up and down a lot.  Yoga teachers say not to do inversions when you're on your period.  Downward dog is fine.

Janice talked about the lady in the old Playtex ads.  It was totally awesome!  She also talked about the old maxi pads with the belts.

Then, they played the Q&A from Danni Allen.  Of course, this included talk of cabbage and toots.

Making Friends is Hard to Do

Aired on April 8, 2013.

It's hard to make friends as you get older.  It seems like as you get older, you've locked in your group of friends.  When you transform your life, you outgrow a lot of relationships.  Joining a group for something you're interested in is a great way to make friends.  Take a fresh look at your neighbors, co-workers, classmates.

Once you've met someone who is like-minded, get to know their friends.  Don't be afraid to be vulnerable and "ask out" a new friend.

Sometimes you have to give up your old "playthings," and "playgrounds" so that you don't slide back into bad habits.

Janice was eating Reeses!  Jillian told her to get Unreal peanut butter cups instead.

Reasons Why People Give Up the Gym

  1. A new relationship.  Frequent exercisers have more feelings of desire.  You HAVE to keep working out because it will improve your relationship.  Women who do their own thing in the context of the relationship have better relationships.  You can also be more active with your partner.
  2. You've been sidelined by an injury.  Some people don't want to go if they can't do 100 percent.  You have to just show up and do it.
  3. You fall out of your routine for some reason.  You have to just jump back in.  Make plans with a friend so you just have to do it.  Think about how much better you'll feel when it's over.
Snacks

Bring them with you.
  1. Hard-boiled eggs.  You can devil them.  Put them in a Tupperware container and take it with you.
  2. Freeze-dried fruit.  It doesn't have the extra sugar in it.  Have some nuts with it, but don't go crazy.
  3. Cheese sticks.  Pack them with some whole-wheat crackers.
  4. Pop Chips.  Yummy.  Get the baked ones.
  5. Almond butter packets.
  6. Jerky.  Try to get it organic so it doesn't have MSG or smoke-flavored stuff.
  7. 22 Days Bar.  Get one that's around 200 calories and has protein.
The Love Doctor

Nicole called.  She's back in school for interior design.  Keeping busy can be an excuse for not taking the time to be vulnerable and meet someone.  She needs to remind herself of her worth, so if she meets someone that's crazy, it's not devastating.

Are you a co-signer? Artificial sweeteners.

Aired on April 22, 2013

People enable each other for various reasons.  Sometimes it's uncomfortable to call people out.  We enable them because it affords us something.

Seven Tests of True Strength

  1. Long Jump.  Jump as far forward as you can and measure it.  An ordinary person jumps.  Males do six feet or less.  Above average is 6-8 feet.  If you're super fit, it's 8+ feet.
  2. Squat, stand up and bicep curl, and then press over your head.  Use dumbbells that are about 30 percent of your body weight.  Super fit is 16 reps in a minute.  Incredibly fit is 20 plus reps in a minute.
  3. One controlled wall squat.  See how far you can lower your body without touching the wall or falling backward.  Great shape is if you can do a full squat.  Average is if you can get half way down.  Ordinary is less than half way.
  4. Dead lift.  A squatting dead lift.  Ordinary fitness can do body weight.  Super fit is 1 3/4 of your body weight.  You need to know how to do this before you try it.
  5. Pushup with claps.  The average person can do ten with no clap.  The over average person can do 5 clapping pushups.  Super fit can do 10 clapping pushups.
  6. Hold plank on the forearms and the balls of your feet.  Ordinary is a minute or less.  Above average is 2-3 minutes.  A super fit person can do 3 minutes or more.
  7. Beep test.  Download the Beep Test app.  Run from one cone to another.  An ordinary person can get back and forth 9 times.
Artificial Sweeteners

Sarah called to ask Jillian about losing her last 20 pounds.  She recently lost 60 pounds, most of it baby weight.  Once a week she has a diet coke, and sometimes uses Sweet and Low in her coffee.  She also has hypothyroidism.

Artificial sweeteners can make you want to eat more.  They train your body not to recognize sugar as calories.  Jillian suggests just using sugar.

Her husband has Type-2 Diabetes.  She made a sugar-free cheesecake for him and used Stevia.  Current research shows that Stevia is non-toxic.  The only problem is that it can make you a little gassy.

The Stigma Around Therapy & The Skinny on Supplements

First aired on May 27, 2011

Therapy

Jillian has been going to the same therapist for a while.  It's a safe place for her.  It's where she can go and unravel.  She doesn't understand why there is so much stigma attached to therapy.

Her mom brought her to therapy when she was five.  She was starting to see things.

Therapy is a journey of self-exploration where you learn to understand why you do the things you do.  Therapy helps you see how you hold yourself back so you can get out of your own way.

Therapists have to put in hours before they get their degrees.  Google LOW FEE THERAPY in your area.  It could be $15-$20/hour.  You could try Overeaters Anonymous or any type of twelve-step approach.

Supplements

Getting your nutrients from food is not enough.  Because the soil is so depleted, our food has fewer nutrients.  If you're growing your own or you eat organic, this isn't so much of an issue.

We often don't vary our diet enough.  We are creatures of habit, and we eat the same thing all of the time.  This means that supplementation is important.

You can supplement all different types of things.  What should you look out for?

  1. Multivitamin.  A quality multivitamin is expensive.  You don't want to go buy something cheap that's $9 for 100.  They suck.  New Chapter Organic, and Rainbow are great brands, but they're expensive.  You should be able to get a month's supply for $30-$40.  Pick your multi based on gender.  Women lose iron from menstruation, men do not.  Therefore women's formulas have more iron.
  2. Probiotic.  Healthy bacteria.  Unless you can afford organic yogurt, you shouldn't be eating yogurt.  They have tons of hormones and antibiotics.   Good bacteria are responsible for immunity, digestion.  We eat tons of stuff with antibiotics, and it's killing the good bacteria in our body.
  3. Omega-3s.  If you can't stand seafood, this might be a good idea.  Do research online to find a good one.
  4. Vitamin D.  Good idea.  Take 1000-5000 IUs of Vitamin D.  Ask your doctor to do a test to see how much Vitamin D you need.  Fifteen minutes of sunlight during non-peak hours is also a good idea.
  5. Calcium and Magnesium together.  Magnesium helps absorb the calcium.

Caller

Lady who wants to lose weight has tendonitis.  Jillian wants her to see a physical therapist.  They will really be able to help her.  She should have her doctor write her a prescription for physical therapy.

Another lady just adopted a baby!  The birth mom has Type-2 Diabetes.  Jillian says you can change the expression of your genetics based upon your input.  Kids are a product of nature AND nurture.  The more she knows about the birth family, the better.

Learning Empathy, Understanding Your Body Type

This podcast originally aired on March 11, 2013.

Jillian is focusing on maximizing the good in the world and shut out the darkness.  The Restorative Justice program in the UK is bringing offenders face-to-face with their victims.  They are trying to get the offender to experience empathy.  Allows victim to gain some understanding of the person who harmed them so they can forgive them.

Forgiveness helps you to move on, and one of the best ways to move on is to develop empathy.  It gives you a sense of connectedness.  Take the time to develop empathy.

Exercises that Jillian Hates

  • Using momentum to thrust your hips up and do more reps on overhand pull-up.  Switch to a chin-up instead or do assisted overhand pull-ups.  Or do close-handed pushups.  Like chataranga, but your hands are right under your shoulders.
  • 45-degree leg press. Forces your back into a rounded position and compresses your spine.  Can cause a herniated disc, which is super bad.  Instead, do a king squat.
  • Pec-deck.  Better to do a dumbbell fly.
  • Leg extension machine
Caller

An acrobat called in!  Wanting to know why some people can eat tons of calories, and others barely eat anything, but everyone has about the same weight.

Jillian says that even though the girls don't weigh a lot, they probably aren't really healthy.  Don't sacrifice your health for aesthetic.

Jillian says... Notes from the Jillian Michaels Show Podcast

This podcast aired on March 4, 2013.

Jillian is giving relationship advice!  Looking for love?

1.  Go where people who are single and like-minded are likely to be.  Get out of the house. Go on the dating websites.  Match.com.  Plentyoffish.com.  Ask your friends to set you up.

2.  Let go of perfection.  For your and for a potential beau.  The grass is going to be greener where you water it.  On the flip side, don't feel that you can change someone to be something that they're not.  Don't think that if you're good enough, you can mold them into who you want them to be.

3.  Don't fall in love with being in love.  No need to fast-track it.  You don't get to see the real person for at least three months.  After that you see the insecurities and ugly things about people.  Important stuff.

Caller

Called Natalie.  Jillian called her as "The Love Doctor."  Natalie was cheated on.  She thinks it's her fault.  Jillian thinks the guy had issues.  Natalie said there were red flags.  Jillian said, "Aha!"

He had intrinsic issues, and Natalie thought she could change him.  You can't change somebody.  She thinks that if she's thin, good, smart, funny enough, the red flags will go away and she'll change this person.  This person is probably reminiscent of someone in her past.

When she was a child, her parents wanted her to lose weight.  Jillian wants Natalie to realize that these issues are about the old boyfriend and parents, not her.

In the future, Natalie needs to leave the relationship if she feels that dynamic of not feeling good enough.  She has to change.  She has to stop trying to be everything to everyone.  Instead of putting the energy into everyone else, she needs to put it into herself.  Turn the energy inward, and you will start to feel more fulfilled.  You won't feel depleted.

Jillian's new book is out!  Slim for Life.  Check it out.

Jillian's New Years Resolution. Excuses, excuses. Notes from the Jillian Michaels Show Podcast.

This podcast was posted on February 4, 2013.

Jillian's resolution is to be better with money.  Now that she has kids, she feels that she needs to be more responsible.  She thinks she has a compulsive spending problem.

How are you nurturing yourself to fill the emptiness?  Where do you really feel held and nurtured?

It's sometimes hard to put yourself first sometimes.  When you get too depleted, there's none of you left to give to the ones you love.  Jillian and Heidi would like to go away, but they're freaked out to do it!

Staying healthy and fit with as little effort as possible.  That's what Jillian's new book is all about!

Fitness on the Fly.

Did you know that there are gyms in airports?  Go to www.airportgyms.com to find  gyms that are in or close to airports.

On the plane, get up and walk around every hour or so.  You can get blood clots on a plane.  Stretch in your chair.  Focus on your breathing.

Pick a hotel with a gym.

Be action packed.  Do your workouts through your computer in your hotel room.  Download some workouts from iTunes, or bring your DVDs.  You can even use water bottles as weights if needed.  You could also bring resistance tubes.

Take a deck of cards and assign an exercise to each suit.  Go through the deck.  Do the number of reps that corresponds to the number on the card you draw, along with the appropriate exercise.

Be demanding.  See if there are free On Demand workouts on hotel TVs.

Have an adventure.  Go do something active.  Let the concierge help you.

Happy trails to you.  http://www.trails.com/.  It has all kinds of trails listed.

Sightsee.  If you're on your feet all day long, you're going to burn calories.  See the town on your feet.

Get wet.  Go in the pool and swim laps.  Play in the pool with your kids and be active.

Join a gym that's a chain.  You can go to other locations in different cities.

Callers

Lady is calling in to figure out when she can work out, but she drinks a lot of liquid sugar.  Her weight is climbing, and she has a busy schedule.  Jillian recommends that she drinks eBoost instead of soda and lattes.  A cup of coffee has no calories.  This lady can fix her diet if she wants to.

Create a negative association with the sugary drinks.  She needs to work on getting rid of the unhealthy foods.  She also needs to work less, because she has only 4-5 hours to sleep at night.  She has a lot of thinking to do.

Dealing With Snotty Nose Season: Motivating Your Kids. Notes from the Jillian Michaels Show Podcast.

This podcast was posted on January 21, 2013.

Jillian's son has croup.  :-(    Adults that have kids are 53 percent less likely to get sick.

Ways to avoid getting sick:

  1. Vitamin C and Zinc.  Has been shown to kill a virus because it makes an acidic environment.  Take 1000 mg of Vitamin C every two hours when you're sick.  You will poo like crazy because it's not easy on the digestive system.  Zicam is good for zinc.
  2. Oxacillin. Take it when you're about to get sick, under the tongue.
  3. Elderberry Extract.  Helps to kill a virus.  Zand brand makes elderberry lozenges.
  4. Honey.  Antimicrobial.  Under a year old, children can't have honey.  Get raw, unpasteurized honey.  Don't get the major high fructose corn syrup honey.  Get the real stuff.
  5. First Defense.  For kids.  Has the zinc and tastes sweet.
  6. Garlic.  For toddlers, it's very antimicrobial. Cook it up and put it in their food.
  7. Saline.  Salt kills everything.  Saline spray in your nose is great.
  8. Oregano oil.  Also antimicrobial.
  9. Wash your hands all the time.  Don't touch your face.
Lots of talk about relationships, and being able to look at your own issues.  Just because you're flawed, it doesn't mean you're less than or not good.

Helping Your Kids Get Healthy

Parents would rather talk to their kids about sex than their weight.  You have to talk to them.  You have to use "we" instead of "you" when you're talking to them.  How you talk to them about it is key.
  1. You need to change your ways.  You are their primary role model.  You need to get healthy and prioritize your own wellness.
  2. Talk to your kid.  Make it a family affair.  "I want us to be healthier."  Don't single them out.  No one gets the Fruit Loops.  Bring in healthier foods.  Give your kids treat foods once a week.  The majority of their foods should be "better for them" choices.  Prioritize your organic dollars on dairy and meat.
  3. Portion size.  You don't need to give them enormous portions.
  4. Make the healthier snacks available for kids and accessible.  Build their environment around healthy activities.  Create an environment that's conducive to activity.
  5. Limit screen time to two hours a day.  Watching a television can actually turn on obese genes.
  6. Get outside and play!  Take them to the park.
  7. Find activities they like to do.
  8. Positive feedback.  Give them compliments about their exercising.  Praise effort, not success.
  9. Teach PE with a group of parent friends.
Callers

Barbara - having trouble maintaining her weight.  She was on a low-carb diet.  She lost her weight in a way that's not sustainable.  She needs to eat less, move more, and eat the best quality food possible.  She needs to count calories.  Barbara wants to be a "normal" person that can eat cheeseburgers.  She needs to figure out her calorie allowance for the day and eat within the calorie limit.  Jillian will send her the book Slim for Life.  Lucky Barbara!

We're 100! A few golden nuggets from the past 100 shows. Notes from the Jillian Michaels Show Podcast.

Podcast published on January 14, 2013.

This is the 100th Jillian Michaels Show podcast!  Jillian talked about how she is puked on/pooped on/having boogers wiped on her.  Janice mentioned that Jillian changed as a host of the show.  She started feeling the need to call people.

  1. Ginger's Eggs.  Janice talked about how her relative has a chicken was part of a group of chickens.  They call Heidi.  She doesn't know, though she took a class about raising chickens.  They are a flock.
  2. The pronunciation of "produce."  It's pronounced differently in Canada and the United States.  Jillian doesn't believe her.  So, they call a supermarket in Canada.  The pronunciation was difficult to hear.
  3. Fifty Shades of Gray.  Janice read the dirty pages of it.  They call the Barnes & Noble and talk to Peter and ask him why it is so popular.  He said that he thinks media exposure made it more popular.  Then, they call Jillian's friend Andi.  She said that it provides permission to talk about having relations under the guise of literature.
  4. Daily Dose.  There's an episode about fall beauty tips in which Janice put a banana in her pants, but it was edited, so it's odd that it's there.  They called Jillian's mom, even though a dishwasher was being installed at her house.  Jillian asked if Jillian ever pulled a doll out of her pants like she was having a baby or put a banana in her pants.
They've had some great guests like Suze Orman, Danica Patrick, Tara Mohr, Suzanne Sommers, Myrtle Potter, and Dr. VanHerle.  Dr. V's Top Seven have been very popular.  Favorite was the Top Seven Things Found in Your Toilet.  Everyone should check what comes out into the toilet.  What comes out tells us about our metabolism and what's happening in your body.  Janice remixed the top seven so that it quickly listed a bunch of different kinds of poo.

The rest of the show played some of the funniest highlights from the past 100 shows.  Very funny!

The Biggest Loser Debut, Food Quiz Time. Notes from the Jillian Michaels Podcast

Podcast posted on December 28, 2012

Biggest Loser Debut

Get excited!  The Biggest Loser Debut is going to be a two-night premiere.  Compelling studies of people overcoming their demons.

Talk of lawsuits and fighting impulsivity.  If you have a chicken little in your life, how is it affecting you?  If it's taxing on you, you might need to detox your life from that.  Put yourself in a supportive environment, and you will make new friends.

Food Quiz

  1. How many calories in a pound?  3500 calories per pound
  2. Some red food dye is made from bugs.  True.  Labeled as carmine.
  3. Pink slime is...beef treated with ammonia.
  4. Which has the most salt?  Raisin Bran has 300-some mg of salt.  More than potato chips or a piece of American cheese.  Yikes!
  5. Which cocktail contains something that treats malaria?  Gin and Tonic.  The tonic does it.
  6. What is trans fat?  Fat that has a hydrogen atom added to it.
  7. What is xantham gum?  It's a binder.  Made from bacteria that feed on corn and soy.  They "think" that it's non toxic.
  8. Propelyne glycol is a food additive. You can also find it in antifreeze.  It's in your toothpaste.  It keeps things from drying out.
  9. What's better?  Multi-grain, whole grain, or enriched grain?  Whole grain.  It needs to say 100 percent whole grain.
  10. All processed food is bad.  False.  Frozen vegetables are good.
  11. What is the ideal ratio of protein, carbs, and fat you should be eating?  Protein - 40 percent, Carbs  30 percent, Fat 30 percent.
  12. How much water should you drink?  Drink enough until your pee looks like lemonade.  If it looks like apple juice, keep drinking.
We have no idea what we're eating.
Callers

Beth - Has a 14 month old.  Needs recipe ideas for toddlers.  Fresh Start by Tyler Florence is a good resource.  Baeba Cook baby food maker.  Mix organic vanilla yogurt with fruit puree.  Jillian also recommends bribing.  Offer a cookie if the child eats all of the chicken or whatever.  Kale chips.  Barlene's lemon merengue fish oil.

Caller doing Body Revolution.  Wanted to know about timing workouts and eating.  Really, there's no effect.  You don't want a lot of starch right before you go to sleep.  About two hours before you go to bed, you want to avoid starchy carbs.  Whenever you can fit it in is the best time to fit it in.  In a perfect world, you should do the workout at the same time every day.

Stop Waiting To Live Your Life - How To Build a Booty - Notes from the Jillian Michaels Show Podcast

Podcast was published on January 7, 2013.

Jillian and Janice recapped the hellishness of the holidays.  Janice talked about how she bought Christmas decorations in anticipation of having the perfect home.  That would be a log home.  A house like Michael Landon's home.  She can't afford it, but she's acquiring things in anticipation.  Jillian wants her to be happy with where she's at.

Life is now.  People have to love you now for who you are.  Oh my, there was a lot of talking about having stuff and how that affects happiness.  Jillian worries about not being able to take care of everyone in her world.

Jillian made Janice call someone to invite them over for tea.  The alternative was to sign up for match.com.  Jillian wants all listeners to take a risk and reach out to someone.

Kitchen Essentials that Will Help You Keep Slim

  1. Kitchen scale - Use for one or two weeks, and you'll start to be able to eyeball portions.  Weigh your food when it's raw.  It cooks down in size, but it still has all of the calories once it's cooked.
  2. Measuring cups - Use to measure cereal.
  3. Oil mister - If you have iron pans, you'll need this
  4. Steamer - Great way to prepare your foods.  Cheap and easy.  Saves you a ton of calories.
  5. Herb mill - Shred fresh herbs.  Jillian got this for Christmas instead of a chocolate Santa.
  6. Muffin tin - Make fattening things in small sizes.  It's portion control!
  7. Dab off your food.  You can save about 200 calories by patting off the extra oil on your food at restaurants.
  8. Chill things.  Then the congealed fat comes to the top.  Just scrape it off and you're saving a ton of calories.
Callers

Mara - Wants a juicy booty.  You can't tell your body where to lose and gain fat.  You can try to build muscle.  She needs a calorie surplus, and needs to exercise with heavy weights.  The extra calories are used to repair muscle.  Eat about 10 percent more than you're burning in a day.  Lift the lower body with heavy weight.  Do deep squats with weight, lunges.  Don't eat crap food.  Eat protein. It's going to take at least six months.

Vanessa - Has really low energy.  Needs to go see an endocrinologist or a gynecologist.  She has really bad PMS.  Low sodium, no alcohol, and primrose oil can help.  Vanessa is beyond that.  She may have something more serious going on.  She needs to have her bloodwork checked, and check for cysts.  For water weight, you want high potassium food like coconut water, bananas, leafy greens.  Reduce your sodium, avoid alcohol, have some grass-fed red meat, take primrose oil.  Getting in control of your biochemistry will also help with issues down the road.

Janice shared that she still gets her period although she's 53.  Jillian was uncomfortable.  Janice said that Jillian has issues with "the area."  The end of this show was super hilarious.  As always, talk of passing gas.  Worth a listen!

Holiday Survival Mode - Notes from the Jillian Michaels Podcast

Staying fit during the holidays.  The obligatory segment.

Food - Your attitude during the whole time period is what's important.

  1. Pick a few days that you're going to indulge.  Not every day.  Pick a couple of key days.  Jillian is giving you two days.
  2. When you go to the parties, don't go hungry.  Bring something healthy.  Don't drink too much.  Not a good idea to get wasted at your company party either.  Janice shared that she stuck a paper maiche reindeer up her boss's wife's skirt.  Don't drink more than two drinks at a party.  The drinking wreaks havoc on everything.
  3. Make healthy swaps.  Healthy green beans instead of green bean casserole.  Use common sense.
  4. Don't go for seconds.
  5. Brush your teeth with Colgate Whisps so you don't want to eat anymore.
  6. Chew gum.  New brand called Spry that only has xylitol is great.  Distracts you.
  7. Gargle with sugar water.  It tells your mind that you've had a treat.
  8. Imagine yourself eating protein.  If it sounds good, you're probably really hungry.  If it doesn't, you're probably not.
  9. Throw away the junk food in your house.  Ruin it so you can't go back in the trash and rescue it.
  10. Fitness:  You know you can do things from online with resistance tubes.  There's nothing you can't do in a 4x4 space with your own body weight.
Fitness Gifts
  • Trek Desk Treadmill Desk.  Not cheap, but goes over any treadmill that you have.  You can work and walk at the same time.
  • Body Revolution.  90-day weight loss.
  • Monster headphones.  You can swim with them!
  • Body Media Arm Fit Band.
  • Belkin Fast Fit IPhone case.  $20
  • Garmin, Motoactive Heart Rate Monitor
  • Pocket Pedometer
  • iBike.  You can put your iPhone on your road bike.
  • Sky Caddy SPXW GPS.  Precisely surveyed golf course maps.  Gives lots of tips.
Peeing Black

A caller exercised a ton, and she peed black!  The breakdown of muscle fibers leads to the breakdown of muscle fibers into the blood stream.  Now she's super scared to work out.  Jillian said it's rare.  There's zero regulation with Crossfit.  It's metabolic resistance training.  Jillian is going to send this girl Body Revolution.

What are the enemies of being great?

The Enemies of Being Great - from Forbes magazine

Availability - Being too quick to take something that's available or offered instead of sitting with nothing.  Exercise the power of no and have faith that the right thing will come along.  If you take the wrong thing, it can cause more problems in the long run than its worth.  Don't just go with what's available, because then you're coming from a place of fear.

Ignorance - Don't take action without information.  It's like taking a wrecking ball to your world.  Make informed choices that will lead to results.  Come at the action with informed choices.

Comfort - A dangerous place to be because you get apathetic.  Risk is terrifying.  If you never take the risk, you will always lose.  If you're sitting in a job you don't like instead of starting your own business when you really want to, that's a sacrifice.  Don't allow comfort to be enough.

Passivity - Listen to your internal voice that warns you when something is a bad idea.  When you know something is a bad idea and you do it anyway, you're going to pay for it.  A lot of women don't want to have others think they are a b*tch.

Five Stealth Health Foods

Celery - Four sticks of celery a day can lower blood pressure a little bit.  Janice suggested ants on a log, and Janice told her that she hates it.  Raisins and dry fruit suck.

Seaweed - Packed with healthy nutrients and calcium.  Good for vegans who need a source of calcium.  You can get it in sushi or buy the sheets of seaweed.  Also has a lot of potassium.

Hemp Seeds - Flax is really estrogenic.  Hemp is great because it has omega-3s and provides all of the essential amino acids.

Scallops - Almost 80 percent protein.  Just a 3 oz serving has 20 grams of protein and only 95 calories.  Loaded with magnesium and potassium.

Dark Meat - So good for you!  Healthy fats, and the saturated fat in it has zero impact on your cholesterol.  An ounce of dark meat only has 8 more calories than an ounce of white meat.

Lots of talk about toots.  Of course!  Jillian's children have some major gas.

Cool Skinny Tips

Vitamin D - People who start a weight loss program with higher levels of Vitamin D lose more weight. Vitamin D boosts the effects of leptin in the body.  Take a Vitamin D3 supplement.  Or, go outside for about 10 minutes during non-peak hours.

Manage Peer Pressure - Happens with alcohol all of the time.  If your friends are drinking and you're not, it becomes an issue.  If Jillian stops drinking for two weeks, she'll lose 5 pounds.  You've got to say no, and use a firm tone.  Say, "Don't say this to me again."  If you do it right, you only have to endure the un-comfortability for a little bit.

License to Splurge - People think that if they exercise a lot they can chow down.  This isn't true.  Use your head and think calories in, calories out.

Nature - Counties with more nature have lower obesity rates.  People who walk outside go faster and feel less exertion.  Try to get outdoors as much as possible.

Standing Up - The action of sitting up or laying down may actually speed up the production of fat.  Just stand up if you can.

Callers

Are ten minute bursts of exercise as good as 60 minutes of exercise?  NO.  You need to do at least 20 minutes of exercise.  30 is better.  45 is a dream.  Your body doesn't start releasing the fat-burning hormones if you've only exercised for 10 minutes.  The longer you train, and the intensity of your training affect your after-burn.  It also takes a little bit for your body to burn through the available glucose instead of going into the fat stores.

Some Moms Are Damned If They Do and Damned If They Don't - Notes from the Jillian Michaels Show Podcast

Moms - Getting Criticized Left and Right

A woman put her seven-year-old on a diet and is getting a lot of criticism.  Jessica Simpson is also getting a lot of criticism for gaining weight while pregnant.  You don't need to lose the body at all.   You will gain 25-40 pounds when pregnant.  If you maintain your fitness during the pregnancy, your body will bounce right back.

Gaining excess weight makes natural childbirth more difficult.  It can be more difficult to place the epidural.  You are adding fat cells to your fetus.  Your baby smells the flavors of the foods that you eat. If you eat good things, it will make kids want healthy foods when they're older.  The foods you eat can have a dramatic impact on their behavior, the way they sleep, etc.  The better you eat, the better able your child is to develop health.  Excess weight gain is really hard on the mother, and a disservice to the kid.

We have so much pressure to be a size 0.  It used to be size 6, and now it's size 0 or 2.  But then, people say things like "you're eating for two."   People totally bash moms for all kinds of stuff.  Using formula instead of breastfeeding?  You will be criticized.  Use an epidural?  You will be bashed.  It's demonizing.  Pregnancies and parenting is unique in every situation.  We are so quick to jump on moms about being crappy.

Jillian talked about the interview in which she said she thought that being pregnant would ruin her body.  At the time, she was talking about IVF, but it was taken as being against pregnant moms.  She also didn't want to be puking all of the time, totally physically exhausted.  The concept of giving birth is also very scary.  It's okay to say you're scared or worried about it.  We need to stop judging each other. There's room for improvement for every parent out there.  Instead of being super critical, you should think of ways that you can support other moms.

Parenting and motherhood can be like a carte blanche for criticizing.  Solidarity, ladies!

New Disorders - Creating Awareness

If you notice that a friend might be suffering from one of these disorders, you might try to gently talk to them about it.  You can direct them to seek professional help.

Food is about control.  If you have an overweight teen, don't make an issue of it.  Some kids in nursery school won't go to the bathroom all day or they won't eat certain things to exert their own control.  Even as adults we're still controlling things with food.

  • Pregorexia - Some women try to not gain weight while pregnant although you are meant to gain 25-40 pounds while pregnant.  At least 6 pounds of that will be body fat.  Some women start to diet and work out more while they're pregnant.  It's a great disservice to yourself and your baby.  It's coming from a tremendous amount of social pressure, but it's setting the child up for an increased chance of birth defects.
  • Orthorexia - Obsession with healthy or righteous eating.  Only eat organic foods.  Or eliminate an entire food group.  Paleo and vegan people can fall into this category.  If you suggest that the diet might not be optimal, you may be threatening their way of life.  If you find that you are militant about a certain way of eating, there may be an issue.
  • Anorexia athletica - Someone that's addicted to exercise.
  • Drunkorexia - Drinking your calories.  You don't eat so that you can have alcoholic beverages.  Almost 30 percent of female college students exhibit this kind of behavior.  Risk of being compromised or unsafe, and liver disease.  Eat before you go out.
Callers

C-section rehabilitation.  There's a lot of emotion tied up with this.  Jillian thinks we psychosomatically hold on to weight in the c-section surgery area.
  • Do high-intensity intervals.  Do something very metabolic.  Twenty to thirty minutes.
  • Throw in a mat pilates DVD and yoga.  They are the best for rebuilding your core.
  • Drink a lot of water, keep you sodium down.  Coconut water is good because it has a lot of potassium and will flush sodium out.
  • Don't drink alcohol.  That will make a huge difference.
  • Jillian is going to send her Making the Cut.  It's about shedding the last ten pounds.
  • The more you think "this has ruined my stomach," the more you will use it as an excuse.  There are a lot of complex emotions mixed up with it.

Getting to Know Jillian's 80/20 Rule - Notes from the Jillian Michaels Show Podcast

New Jillian Michaels book coming out in February!  270 pages of tips and wonderfulness.  Easy lifestyle strategies for you to get to slim and avoid pitfalls.

80/20 Rule

  • Need to follow the tips 80 percent of the time.
  • Make five meals great and one meal not so great.
  • You could also make 20 percent of your daily calorie allowance treat foods.
  • Jillian would prefer that your treats are chemical free.
  • You can't live perfectly all of the time, it's not possible.
  • Eat really well 80 percent of the time.
  • Don't live for the treats.  You have to have rewards other than food.
Six Ways to Cancer-Proof Your Home

A lot of chemicals that cause cancer also dramatically impact the way your body burns and stores fat.

  • Get rid of your non-stick cookware.  Teflon is toxic if heated over 350 degrees or if it's scratched.  Use cast iron, copper, ceramic, titanium.  Use an olive oil mister.  Lightly grease the pan with organic butter.  The longer you cook the food in the oil, the more the oil gets into the food.  Jillian cooks broccoli in the microwave.  You don't want to overcook it or undercook it.
  • Makeup.  It has a lot of chemicals in it.  There are a lot of green brands now.  Go to paigepadgett.com, and she has all of the green brands listed.  You can use olive oil to moisturize your face.  Use brown sugar for a scrub.  Avocado's a good moisturizer.
  • You don't need bottled water.  You can check the quality of your tap water online.  The plastics in bottled water is super bad for you.  Don't ever heat your food in plastic.  Use a metal water bottle.  Microwave your food in glass or ceramic.
  • Clean Green.  Go online and search for green cleaning.  There's a ton of things you can do with lemon, vinegar, baking soda, olive oil.  You can clean about anything with these ingredients.
  • Paint.  You want VOC-free paint.  Mythic is a good brand.
  • Gardening chemicals.  No.  Garden organically.
Fitness Studies - Takeaways
  • Exercise boosts your brain power.  Interval training is supposed to improve your memory.  In addition to all of the other interval training health benefits.  Do 30 seconds on, one minute off.  Check your heart rate.  Subtract your age from 220 to get your maximum heart rate.  You want to work at 85 percent of that number.  When your recovery comes down to about 65 percent, you want to start again with the intensity.  Put your fingers on your wrist to check your pulse.
  • Exercise can suppress hunger.  Perceived feeling of fullness was higher for those that did 12 weeks of aerobic exercise.
Caller
  • Mom's caretaker is feeding her really bad food.  How to tell her that the cooking needs to be healthier?  Jillian will send her the Master Your Metabolism cookbook.  The point of entry is to tell her that she's worried about her mom's health.  If she is not receptive, there's a bigger problem.
More discussions about who farted and what it smelled like at the end of the show.  And a huge fart noise.  Gotta love it!

This podcast was recorded on 12/1/12.

Jillian and The Biggest Loser - Can You Be Fit and Fat? - Notes from the Jillian Michaels Show Podcast

The producers of The Biggest Loser all got fired.  They started to ask Jillian to come back.  She made a list of things that were acceptable to her, and a list of things that were unacceptable to her.  She had all of the unacceptable things taken out of her contract.  She thinks she underestimated the role she had on The Biggest Loser and the impact it had on her audience.  They're going to have a kid on each team, and are focusing on childhood obesity.  More discussion on the podcast, check it out!

Can You Be Fit and Fat?

  • "Skinny fat" - High body fat content, but slim.  Extremely unhealthy.  Just because a person is smaller, doesn't mean they're healthy.
  • Things that will make you healthy - quality food and exercise.
    • Quality food - it can be like medicine!
    • Exercise - Cleans the body and helps many facets than your life.
  • Eating bad food and being sedentary will make you obese.
  • You can still have extra weight, but be fit.
  • Size is not indicative of wellness.
Re-inventing Potatoes
  • A baked potato is only 150 calories and could have antioxidants.  Skip butter, use greek yogurt instead of sour cream, and put some chives on it.
  • Potato salad - there's a vinegar-based version which is much healthier.  If you still need creaminess, use non-fat yogurt.
  • Make your own fries.  Bake them, don't fry them.  Cut them up, spritz them with olive oil, bake them at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.
  • Mashed potatoes - No butter and whole milk.  Use non-fat milk and no butter.  Boil potato in low-sodium chicken broth to get more flavor.

A lady called in, and she's massively overtraining.  Jillian will be sending her DVDs!

When you're trying to lose weight, you don't want a calorie deficit of over 500 calories, or your body will go into emergency mode and adapt for starvation purposes.  Your metabolism will change, and not for the better.

There will always be stuff on your body you don't like.  Seriously.  Even Jillian doesn't like her own booty.

Making failures work - Notes from the Jillian Michaels Show Podcast

This podcast was recorded on 11/10/12.

Failure Role-Models - people who failed many times
  1. Bill Gates - dropped out of Harvard
  2. Steve Jobs - also dropped out of school and was fired from his own company
  3. Thomas Edison - did over 9000 experiments before inventing the lightbulb
  4. Harrison Ford - auditioned thousands of times before getting any roles
  5. Michael Jordan - cut from the high school basketball team
  6. Albert Einstein - got terrible grades, and was thought to be mentally retarded
  7. Steven Spielberg - was placed in learning disabled classes in high school and then dropped out of school forever.
  8. John Grisham - his first novel was rejected by sixteen agents and twelve publishing houses
  9. Mark Cherry - shopped Desperate Housewives for ten years before anyone would take it
  10. Abraham Lincoln - twelve major political failures before becoming the President of the United States
A lot of people are terrified to fail.  Failure is such an important part of success.  Some are afraid that failure is validation of their own worthlessness.  They also worry that if they fail, they will be such a disappointment that they will become unlovable.  The key is to get back up.

Success is a matter of attrition.  You have to keep trying, but you can't always do the same thing over and over again.  You have to change something and try to improve.  That's how a mistake is a learning experience.  Utilize information from your failures.  The only true failure is not trying.

People you admire have failed many times.  If you don't try, you create a void of nothingness, which is the biggest failure of all.

If the Shoe Fits - importance of properly-fitting shoes for exercise
  • Make sure that the shoe is a half an inch longer than your longest toe.
  • Get the shoe about a half a size larger than you'd normally wear.
  • The forefoot shouldn't be crowded.  If it's crowded, you need a wider shoe.
  • You want a snug fit around the heel.  You heel should not come up out of the shoe.
  • Measure the shoes to your bigger foot.
  • You can lace your shoes in certain ways that will help with shoe fit issues.
  • Get shoes that are specific for your sport.  Don't wear cross trainers when you're running.
  • Go to a running store and have them check your gait.
  • Don't buy foot gear online unless you already know the shoe.
Digestive Download - myths about dieting and the digestive process
  • Dieting does not shrink your stomach.  You cannot change the size of this organ.  It's influenced by genetics.
  • Meat - No, it does not take years to digest.  It is out of your stomach within six hours or less.
  • How often should you go to the bathroom?  Up to three times a day.  If you're going to less than three times a week, that's a big problem and you need to see a doctor.  Papaya is a digestive enzyme.
  • Colon flushes - NO!  This is a bad idea.  Your body is not designed for this.
  • You shouldn't eat 30 minutes before exercising.  Have a small snack 45-60 minutes before exercise.
A man with a new baby called in about exercise vs. getting some sleep.  Jillian recommended four workouts a week, and then the rest of the time, prioritize sleep.

Jillian's Tricks and Treats. Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Notes from the Jillian Michaels Show Podcast.

Very funny opening segment about how Jillian went to a pumpkin patch with her kids.   She gives her kid Barlene's Lemon Merengue flavored fish oil and tells her it's candy.  Hehe!

  • Unreal - make versions of Snickers, Milky Way, etc.  You can get them at the drugstores.  No HFCS, no hydrogenated oil.  It's just sugar and fat, not the chemically stuff.
  • OCHO - make clean candy bars.
  • Paul Newman - makes peanut butter cups.
  • Sundrops - organic chocolate covered peanuts.
  • Celebrate the holiday!  Go to Halloween events, read Halloween stories.  Learn about the tradition and culture.  It doesn't all have to be about the bad food.
Everyone talked about the bad things that people could give out to trick-or-treaters...like pennies or pencils.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month
  1. Early Detection.  You can change the mortality rate by 50 percent if you just catch it early.  Get your regular checkups.  Do the self-exam, regularly.  Do it regularly, because the cancer can grow quickly.  If you catch things earlier, it's so much easier to manage.  85 percent of breast cancer cases that occur have NO family history.
  2. Go Organic!  Pesticides are linked to breast cancer.  The Dirty Dozen are the thin-skinned fruits and veggies that are the worst.  If you can't afford the organic fruits and veggies, don't buy the thin-skinned ones.  Eat an orange.  The Clean 15 has thicker skins or natural insecticides.  Prioritize the organic dollars on grass-fed beef, ocean-caught fish, dairy, avoid soy.
  3. Sleep.  You have to sleep.  If you get fewer than six hours of sleep a night, you get low-grade inflammation.  Try to get 7-8 hours of sleep a night.  If you have to choose between sleep and exercise, sleep.
  4. Alcohol.  Extremely estrogenic.  Not good.  One small, small caveat is red wine.  You don't want more than 4 oz per night maximum.  They think it may mimic the effects of estrogen lowering drugs.
  5. Exercise.  Boosts your immune system, keeps free radicals in check and helps you maintain your weight.  Lowers fat, which makes more estrogen in doctor.
  6. IVF, Birth Control pills.  Read studies first.  Can predispose you to breast cancer and ovarian cancer later in life.  Use condoms.
  7. Food.
    1. Boost fiber content.
    2. Omega-3s - Barlene's.  Inhibits inflammation.
    3. Pomegranate

Taking a Good Look Around You - Notes from the Jillian Michaels Show Podcast

In the first session Jillian and Janice talked about evacuating and planning for emergencies.

Top Seven Things to do in an Emergency Situation - by Dr. Van Herle

1.  Learn how to take vital signs.  Most people don't know how to do this.

    • Are they breathing?  Put your ear down - Do you feel a breath?  Can you see an expansion of the lungs.
    • Radial pulse - go from your thumb right down to that other place.  You want to use your second and third finger.  If that doesn't work, you can go to the neck.  It could cause a stroke though.  Look at the end of the jawbone and march your way to that little corner.  Even if you don't have a watch, you can count out how many beats you count in a minute.  (Okay, I totally didn't understand any of this stuff.  Sorry.  I tried type in exactly what they said, but...I'm not getting it.)  Sixty to eighty beats per minute means someone is in trouble.  We don't want to see pulses under 50-60 bpm unless you know that the person is super fit.  If you give a vital sign when you call paramedics, they will know that that person needs to be triaged immediately.
2.  Chest pain.  Give 325 mg of aspirin.  Have the person chew them up.  If they can't chew them, you put it under their tongue.  The coated aspirin isn't as good because it doesn't absorb as quickly.  Asprin thins the blood and tells the clotting cells not to stick to each other.  Enteric coated aspirins.

3.  Cleaning wounds.  Use hydrogen peroxide.  Cleans out exactly what we see could be a new bacteria or virus in a wound.  Keep hydrogen peroxide available.  It's super cheap.  It's okay to use hydrogen peroxide if you have a wound.

4.  Learn CPR.  Have fire, police, and paramedics programmed into your phone.  911 doesn't work on a cell phone.  If you do get ahold of the responders, they can track you via your phone.

5.  Bacterial infection from raw sewage.  Keep bismuth sulfate (Pepto Bismol) on hand.  It kills the bacteria.

6.  Cooling head down.  If someone feels sick, and you don't know what it's from, get their head cooler with a cold compress.  Put it on their head and the nape of the neck.

7.  The doctor also talked about using a tourniquet.  If you're interested, you're going to have to check out the podcast yourself.  I don't think I had a good enough understanding of what she was saying to write it down here.

Weight loss is calories in, calories out.
  • The quality of your food will keep you from getting cancer, heart disease, etc.
  • Food would be medicine if you ate really quality food.
  • Quality food will naturally optimize your metabolism.
  • You will see a cumulative effect over time if you're eating yucky food.
  • If you eat clean, and eat 1200 calories per day, you'll lose more weight than if you eat 1200 calories of chemically foods.
  • Chemicals in foods can cause all sorts of illnesses.
  • If you're not eating clean, you'll have to work so much harder and create a major calorie deficit.
  • It's all about optimizing your metabolism in the long run, and getting the most out of your metabolism at this moment.
Jillian ripped on Janice for being a bad representative for Canadians.

Resentment will take you down - Notes from the Jillian Michaels Show Podcast - 8/11/12

Resentment

  • Some people think it drives them.  It's like using gasoline.  It keeps your car going, but it ruins the environment, and costs you tons of money.  If you do something because you love it, there's no cost.
  • What are the consequences of your resentment?  What are your alternatives?
  • Acknowledge the part that you're playing in it.  How are you contributing to the situation?  Look at what it's costing you.
  • Set boundaries.  You have to protect yourself.
  • Resentment is a waste of energy, time, and happiness.  Live in the light!  :-)
Negative Feedback - Tara Mohr came on to talk about negative feedback.
  • Women are more affected by negative feedback.  Women's ideas about themselves changed because of the negative feedback.
  • It's important to be able to endure negative feedback.  If you're living your authentic life, people will give negative feedback because they want you to conform more.  If you're vocal, or doing something important, people will give you negative feedback.
  • Feedback tells you about the person giving the feedback.  It doesn't tell you about you.  It's not about dismissing them, but it's giving you information about the people you want to reach and influence.  You can use the feedback to fine tune and rework the project that you're working on.
  • Remember that there are lots of possible truths.  Brainstorm about twenty different stories behind that feedback.
  • Carol Dweck - What is the effect of praise on children.  It's important to reward for persistence and effort.  If you just praise for a job well done, it can be paralyzing.
  • Expect to get negative feedback.  Go on Amazon and look up your favorite authors.  Look at the 5 star reviews, and look at 0 star reviews.  Everyone has negative feedback.
  • Ten Rules for Brilliant Women - Free download by Tara Mohr.  Get it on her website:  http://www.taramohr.com/.
Snack Shockers!
  • Five Starburst = 100 calories.  That's 15-20 minutes of exercise.
  • Four Hershey's Kisses = 100 calories
  • Four Tootsie Rolls = 100 calories
  • Eight Dots = 100 calories
  • Nine Whoppers = 100 calories
  • People don't realize how many of these little things add up
  • Monster Bacon and Beef Cheeseburger with Onion Rings at IHOP = 1900 calories.  That's more than most people should be eating in a day.
  • You can still eat a burger, but not have it be so many calories.  If you make things at home, you can control the calories more.
  • Be savvy and think about how many calories you're eating without realizing it.  Think about how  long you'll have to work out.  Are five Starburst worth 15 minutes of exercise to you?
Four Fitness Tools to Help You Condition Your Core
  • Medicine Ball - Janice thought this was funny.  You're rotating, bending, and doing things that make you use your core.
  • Free weights - Dumbbells - Overhead dumbbell walks.  You target your shoulder and force your torso to stabilize.
